Beef, beans and berries: August menu at The Scottish Cafe

August 3, 2012

We love the crisp tastes of summer veg: and now that we’re finding ever more local suppliers, we can enjoy classic summer ingredients  like fennel and watercress, grown close to home.  How could we top them? With grilled Inverurie rare beef salad, and a wonderful mustardy dressing to bring them all together.

Whether or not it’s picnic weather as you’re reading this, we can’t resist a good potato salad.  Our special this month combines it with spiced local sausage, served with a homemade garlic mayonnaise.

Well, we couldn’t leave the bean eating to the Italians, could we? Scottish beans are now in season. We’re serving ours buttered as a side dish.  If you want to add a little kick to your veg, why not try our local carrots with coriander seeds – delicious.

Having recently sung the praises of Lanark White in our blog, we’re still featuring it on our cheeseboard – but why not also try Criffle, a multi-award winning soft white cheese from Galloway. We also have Inverloch Goats Cheese, so popular among its devotees that it regularly sells out each year.  Don’t miss out – sample it here!

Lanark White remains on the menu as a starter – this month, paired with the classic Scottish summer ingredient of raspberries.  We’re delighted to be featuring soft fruit from Blacketyside Farm, near Leven in Fife, and their raspberries and strawberries are truly luscious.

So, of course, we had to find a place for berries in desserts too.  What better than strawberries together with chocolate – a high-cocoa content chocolate brownie, in fact. Don’t worry, it’ll slip down nicely to round off your summer meal.
